In Hawai`i, an increasing number of organizations, the media, state and county
governments are recognizing the importance of intergenerational connections. Seniors, whether they are mentoring, tutoring or providing
general support, are more accepted as volunteers in schools at all grade levels. Senior residential facilities and centers are exploring ways
to invite young people to participate in their recreational |
and educational activities. Our museums
are featuring special events for grandparents and their grandchildren. The phenomenon of increasing numbers of grandparents as primary
caregivers is an accepted focus of public policy in a state where 13% of our children are cared for by grandparents.
Just two years ago, I would not have been able to talk about an intergenerational movement in Hawai`i. Today I believe we have a movement
with a great deal of momentum.
The potential of intergenerational relationships as a means to change the way we live in communities from one of age isolation and cultural
and values disconnection to one of true age integration has not been fully realized. This is the work ahead for the Hawai`i Intergenerational
Network. We relish the challenge and the promise for a better community.
Aloha,
Maeona Mendelson Executive Director |
