ELDER/KIDS PLAY CLUB: JAPAN SERVICE PROJECT
|
 |
 |
Hawaii Intergenerational Network (HIN) in partnership with Ohana English Preschools (OEP) has launched a service opportunity for seniors. We are sending senior
volunteers from Hawaii to Yokohama, Japan to teach English to preschool children in the OEP schools child care program. Volunteers must be native English speakers,
love working with children and be able commit to a three months stay.
This is a volunteer position but many of the costs of living are covered. Your travel to and from Yokohama will be paid for and you will be covered by medical, travel, and
liability insurance. Lodging in Yokohama is provided (you share a two bedroom apartment with one other volunteer) and bus and subway passes for commuting to the schools.
In addition you will receive 1000 yen per day (approximately $10.00) for food and household supplies and a cell phone with pre-paid minutes. Traveling and sightseeing in Japan
will be on your own.

About the Ohana English Preschools (OEP):
- OEP offers a developmentally appropriate program based on The Creative Curriculum for Family Child Care (authors Diane Tristen Dodge and Laura J. Colker,
published 1999, The Teaching Strategies, Inc.).
- OEP allows children to make choices from a variety of play materials. (The toys are the textbooks).
- OEP offers American style childcare with native English speaking teachers.
- OEP offers intergenerational programming with senior teachers from America.
The exposure to American seniors as volunteers at the preschool level is a new concept in Japan. Parents are looking for high quality education for their children and they
want an international experience. The elder volunteers in the OEP child care program (Elder/Kids Play Club) will have conversations with the children to help them to understand
new English words and encourage them to use language to express themselves. The elder teachers will read to the children, sing songs, do fitness activities and talk with them
during play and help them to put their ideas into words. Volunteers must be able to sit on the floor or low chair (child size).
